The work of Harriet Zabusky-Zand: The oils and pastels which comprise the LIGHT & ATMOSPHERE series are visually dramatic and seductive, with presence reminiscent of Rothko and Motherwell --they reach out and possess our eyes; they seduce us to enter them, become lost in them, as in dream-states. Their luminosity and impact are almost electric. They awaken the viewer to the force and power of light. A viewer in our Cape gallery stood in front of one of them and confessed "I'll never see a sunse on the beach in quite the same way again."
The masks are part of the "DRESSED TO KILL" series, based on the masks of New Guinea, which she has developed over a 10-year period. The concept of enhancing, exaggerating, disguising, and transforming the face -- with paint, feathers, shells, beads or other materials-- as a tribal act to prepare for ritual, hunting, or war has long been a fascinating topic of study. This artist invites us to relate these to our own acts and rituals and to the transforming of our "civilized" faces by emotion, desire, rage. Masks are 9" tall.
Oils, pastels, prints range from 1 to 7 feet; prices from $ 150 to $ 7,500
