Marine & Coastal Art

In this section, Artship is pleased to offer and exhibit work which enriches our appreciation of America's romantic sea-going history-- such as paintings, prints, photographs, and museum-quality ship models .These are some of the finest artists working on marine motifs in America.

the Watercolors of LOIS SALMON TOOLE

Toole is a member of the prestigious "Whiskey Painters of America", the American Society of Marine Artists, and the American Watercolor Society (among others). She is internationally recognized and wins numerous awards every year for the astoundingly lovely, intricate pieces which stand today as foremost examples of the watercolor genre. We have--rather unfairly-- included here only those of her beautiful paintings which represent the ocean and the coast; she is also known for her landscapes and has been published in several books. The following pieces listed portray drydocked boats at a New Jersey coast shipyard; click on any of these to see more:

Cape Cod-scapes by NANCY SILVA

Silva has spent many years photographing the Cape Cod landscapes-- partoicularly of of Wellfleet, Truro and Provincetown --which draw visitors to Cape Cod decade after decade. Her camera is not an instrument of focus but one of poetry, each image taking us far beyond documentation, into the artist's realm. We are reminded, too, that each moment captured can never be repeated in these fragile places. Click on any image below to see a more complete collection.

BOB ALEXANDER presents

CAPE COD and the waters of NANTUCKET SOUND

...................... ...........

Alexander's Cape Cod world-- based mainly in Harwich, Brewster and Orleans-- is viewed through his third eye, the discriminating lens of his camera. His style differs from Silva's in that he is more apt to step through the fences and the trees to zero in on the weathered wood, the rusty nail, the cresting wave, the reflection-- until, of course, the setting sun begins its distinctive Cape Cod performance, winter or summer. Click on any image above to see a more complete collection from this watchful recorder of the fleeting moment.

the Museum-Quality, hand-crafted SHIP MODELS of

SVEN O. JENSEN

These beautiful wooden models are painstakingly researched and meticulously crafted to scale by a marine history buff and artist whose love of ocean-going craft is informed by his years of experience at sea. It takes from 1 to 3 years to complete each model from a set of plans. The ships -- mostly of the 17th to 19th centuries-- with their coppered hulls, tiny deck details, intricate rigging, etc-- are amazing to behold. Photographs hardly do them justice.
